May garden adventures

April 28, 2024September 23, 2025 angiestar 2 comments

As May arrives, gardens across the UK burst into vibrant life. This presents a wealth of opportunity for green-fingered enthusiasts and for a variety of May garden adventures.

planting perennials

May is the perfect time to plant perennial flowers like lavender, peonies, and geraniums. Choose varieties that thrive in your region for long-lasting colour and fragrance.

tending to roses

Give your roses some extra love this month by deadheading spent blooms and feeding them with a balanced fertiliser. Keep an eye out for pests and diseases and treat accordingly.

veggie patch preparartion

Prepare your vegetable patch for summer crops by clearing away weeds, enriching the soil with compost, and planting warm season vegetables like peas, courgette, lettuce, radish, beans, sweetcorn, beetroot, cucumber and tomatoes.

herbs in full swing

Herb gardens are in their element during May. Harvest fresh herbs like basil, mint, and chives for culinary delights, and consider drying or preserving excess herbs for later use.

lawn care essentials

As the dandelions start to go to seed you can keep your lawn looking luscious by mowing regularly, feeding with a high nitrogen fertiliser, and watering deeply during dry spells. Repair any bare patches with grass seed and topsoil.

attracting pollinators

Encourage pollinators like bees and butterflies to visit your garden by planting nectar-rich flowers such as lavender, salvia, and buddleia. Provide shelter and water sources to support their habitat. This will allow the insects in your area to have May garden adventures too!

pots & containers

Refresh your pots and containers with seasonal bedding plants, trailing vines, and colourful foliage. Group them together for visual impact and vary the heights for added interest.

managing weeds

Stay on top of weeds by regularly hoeing or pulling them before they have a chance to establish. Mulch beds with organic matter to suppress weed growth and retain moisture.

composting success

Turn kitchen scraps and garden waste into nutrient-rich compost by layering green and brown materials in a compost bin or heap. Turn the pile regularly to accelerate decomposition. You can add worms to your heap also, they will help break down the waste and leave you with a wonderful nutrient rich compost. They will likely find their own way to your heap so its not essential!

wildlife watching

Create a wildlife-friendly garden by installing bird feeders, insect hotels, and water features. Sit back and enjoy the flurry of activity as birds, bees, and butterflies visit your garden oasis.

With these gardening tips, you’ll be well-equipped to create your own May garden adventures. You’ll be able to nurture your garden into a flourishing haven of beauty and biodiversity. Have fun!
