August Adventures

August 18, 2024September 23, 2025 angiestar Post a comment

EMBRACING NATURE, NURTURING WELLBEING, AND SPARKING CREATIVITY

August is a magical month, full of endless possibilities and the golden days of summer, perfect for August adventures. As we soak in the warmth of the sun and enjoy the last stretch of the summer holidays, it’s the perfect time to dive into activities that bring joy to the whole family. Whether you’re looking to connect with nature, nurture your mental wellbeing, or spark creativity, here at Star and Dandelion, we’ve got you covered. Here are some delightful ideas to make your August truly special.

1. Nature walks & treasure hunts

There’s no better time than August to explore the great outdoors. With the days still long and the weather on your side, why not take the kids on a nature walk? Parks, nature reserves, or even your local woodland can be the perfect setting for a family adventure.

For added fun, turn your walk into a treasure hunt! Create a simple list of items for your little explorers to find—like pinecones, wildflowers, or different types of leaves. It’s a great way to keep them engaged and teach them about the natural world around them. Or you can use the link below to access our downloadable and printable Nature Scavenger Hunt.

2.Create Your Own Summer scrapbook

Capture the memories of this summer by creating a family scrapbook. Collect photos, pressed flowers, ticket stubs from your day trips, and anything else that represents your summer adventures. This activity not only fosters creativity but also gives everyone a chance to reflect on the joyful moments shared over the season.

You could also add in sketches of places or moments that you all enjoyed, or of mini beasts or wildlife you discovered on a walk. You can create a lovely keepsake to look back on when the colder months roll in. Remember the fun you had in the summer with this creative way to store your memories!

3. Mindful Moments in nature

August is a wonderful time to introduce mindfulness into your family’s routine. Take a moment during your nature walks to pause, breathe deeply, and listen to the sounds around you. Encourage your children to close their eyes and focus on the rustling leaves and swaying trees, bird songs, or even the gentle hum of insects.

If there is a stream or shallow river why not take your socks and shoes off and dip your feet into the cool water for a few minutes. If you visit a beach and it is safe to enter the water then you could do this in the sea too. Cold water is excellent for calming the mind and improving circulation in the body. it can be very powerful in reducing anxiety and stress, increasing your mood and energy.

Mindfulness helps reduce stress and increases our appreciation for the simple pleasures in life. It’s a small practice that can have a big impact on your family’s mental wellbeing.

4. Garden Camping Adventure

If you’re not able to venture far this summer or need a cheaper alternative to a campsite, why not bring the August adventure home? Set up a tent in your garden, lay out sleeping bags, and enjoy a night under the stars. This simple activity can be just as exciting as a real camping trip, with the added comfort of having your home nearby.

You can even get creative with a backyard nature scavenger hunt before the sun sets, or tell stories around a makeshift campfire (or a lantern!). The experience of sleeping outside, listening to nocturnal sounds, and waking up with the sunrise can be a refreshing change from the everyday routine. Don’t forget the marshmallows!

5.Creative Crafting For Calm

Art and crafting are perfect ways to channel energy and express creativity. Gather some natural materials during your outdoor adventures—like stones, leaves, or twigs—and bring them home for a crafting session. You could create nature-inspired prints, paint stones, or even build a mini fairy house with your findings. You can use twigs or feathers as a natural paintbrush and use items you find to make unique marks and patterns

Crafting is a wonderful way to help kids (and adults!) unwind, focus, and develop fine motor skills. Plus, it’s incredibly satisfying to create something beautiful from nature’s own offerings.

6. Boost Your Wellbeing with Journalling

As summer begins to wind down, take some time to reflect on your family’s experiences and how you’re feeling. Journaling is a fantastic tool for mental wellbeing, offering a space to express thoughts, dreams, and gratitude. Encourage everyone in the family to jot down their favorite memories from the summer or write about what they’re looking forward to in the coming months.

In our shop, you’ll find cute Sass & Belle notebooks in 2 designs. These could be used as a mini journal, making this practice even more inviting and portable! Whether you’re writing about the day’s adventures or setting intentions for the new school year, journaling is a wonderful way to connect with your inner self.

7. Prepare For The Transition Back To School

While August is about soaking up the last days of summer, it’s also a good time to start easing the kids (and yourself!) back into the school routine. Start by gradually adjusting bedtimes and reintroducing learning activities, such as reading together or playing educational games.

You can also involve the kids in preparing for the new school year by letting them help choose supplies or organise their study space. This can help build excitement and reduce any anxiety about the upcoming transition. We have pencil cases, lunch bags, snack boxes, drink bottles and more in our online shop, perfect for getting prepared for the new term.
